Program Description

The Medical Assistant Technician Diploma Program is designed to prepare students to obtain entry-level employment as medical assistant technicians. This program offers students the opportunity to learn the necessary knowledge and skills both in the classroom and in a supervised clinical practice. Students also learn how to prepare patients for various technical examinations, such as EKG’s and phlebotomies.

Success Seminar

This course is designed to inform students of successful methods for enhancing academic skills, personal life management, and educational navigation and how it is practiced in various personal and professional situations. Assessments provide for reflection and improvement of individuals.

Medical Ethics

This course is designed to inform the student of the legal aspects of their profession and of medicine. Ethics, bioethics, negligence, and the Good Samaritan Statute will be covered. HIPAA and the importance of confidentiality, contracts, and the importance of proper documentation will also be discussed.

Administrative Office Procedures

Students learn office procedures such as filing, handling mail, and preparing budgets. Students also learn stress management strategies and the importance of workplace ethics and effective communication in diverse environments. This course explores changes and challenges in the 21st-century workplace and the role of the administrative professional within that setting.

Medical Terminology

This course offers an introduction to medical terms through an analysis of their construction, including prefix, suffix, root, connecting, and combining forms. Students acquire an understanding of medical meanings applicable to the structure, function, and diseases of the human body. Abbreviations and their appropriate usage are represented.

Anatomy and Physiology I

This course provides a comprehensive study of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Topics include body organization, homeostasis, cytology, histology, and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems, and special senses. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of principles of anatomy and physiology and their interrelationships. Laboratory work includes dissection of preserved specimens, microscopic study, physiologic experiments, computer simulations, and multimedia presentations.

Anatomy and Physiology II

This course provides a comprehensive study of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Topics include body organization, gynecology, the reproductive, circulatory, sensory, and lymphatic systems, and the brain function. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of principles of anatomy and physiology and their interrelationships. Laboratory work includes dissection of preserved specimens, microscopic study, physiologic experiments, computer simulations, and multimedia presentations. Lab included.

Basic Clinical Procedures

This course is designed to give students practical, basic clinical skills for working in the medical office environment. Some of the areas covered are patient education, communication skills, patient history, vital signs, nutrition, and mental health. It also covers assisting the physician with examinations and patient treatment modalities. Lab included.

Lab Procedures

This course is designed to introduce students to the microscope and its use, the culturing of specimens, and staining techniques. Students will learn diagnostic testing, have practical experience in hematology, and perform venipuncture on a training arm. Also included are automated laboratory testing routines to familiarize students in hematological studies. Lab included.

Principles of Pharmacology Lecture/Lab

Students will be instructed in the basic rules of preparation and administration of oral/parenteral medications; parts of prescription; commonly prescribed medications; how they affect the body, and why they are prescribed. Students will also practice preparation and administration of oral and parenteral medications in a simulated environment using a practice mannequin. Occupational safety and health administration guidelines are discussed and strictly adhered to.

Cardiology

This course is designed to teach students how to perform a 12-lead electrocardiogram and to identify life-threatening arrhythmia. They will complete at least two electrocardiograms and interpret these for class. An overview of other commonly performed cardiovascular studies is also presented. Lab included.

Medical Assistant Exam Prep

This course includes preparation for certification exams in the medical assistant field. This course includes practice assessments covering topics covered throughout the medical assistant program courses.

Externship

Medical assistant: The externship experience provides students with the opportunity to practice the skills they learned in school. It is a real world scenario in which they will work with patients, doctors, and other members of the health care delivery team. The externship coordinator will complete a mid-term evaluation tracking the students’ progress, as well as a final evaluation at the completion of their hours. The externship coordinator will monitor their progress, along with the externship site supervisor, with on-site visits being performed. Prerequisite: Must successfully pass competencies assessment. Prerequisites: Must successfully complete all other courses in program.

Applicants for healthcare provider programs including the Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Associate in Science Program, Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Diploma Program, and Medical Assistant Technician Diploma Program must complete a Student Attestation of Understanding That Criminal and/or Health Background May Limit or Prevent Employment in Healthcare Provider Fields form. This student attestation form was designed to disclose certain requirements or limitations to prospective students interested in training for the healthcare provider field. This requirement is established in consideration of Fla. Admin. Code 6E-1.0032 (6)(g) (2012).
